Direction Determines Destination

Where will you be in ten years?

If you listen to almost any interview or self-improvement podcast today, there is one

question that is almost guaranteed to be asked: "Where do you see yourself in ten years?”

It’s a question designed to make us think about our ultimate destination. We all

have dreams, goals, and a picture of where we want our lives to end up. But having

a destination in mind isn't the same as actually getting there. Reaching that ten-year goal requires looking not just at the horizon, but at the ground right in front of us.

Proverbs 4:26-27

Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.

This verse speaks volumes about how we navigate life. It highlights the spiritual and

practical roadmap for arriving where God has called us to be:

Be Intentional:
"Ponder the path"

Just like using a map or GPS, we need to be intentional about the direction we're heading in life. What are our goals? What are our values? What does God's Word say about the path we should be on?

Learn to Say No:
"Ways will be sure"

Reaching our destination is about taking consistent steps in the right direction. In a world of infinite possibilities, what we say “no” determines success more than what we say “yes” to.

Keep Moving Forward:
"Do not swerve"

Life will throw us curveballs. There will be temptations and distractions. But we must stay focused and keep moving forward on the path God has set before us.

The Wrong Road Reaches the Wrong Destination

I have no sense of direction—thankfully, GPS exists! But it's incredibly irritating to

realize you're on the wrong path, heading in the opposite direction of your intended

destination. We understand this concept when it comes to physical roads, but we often forget it applies to our lives. Or at least, we live as if we don't believe it.

Nobody gets married to get divorced, yet people get divorced.

Nobody plans to get overly indebted, yet people do.

Nobody plans to have a shallow relationship with God, yet people do.

Nobody plans a purposeless life, yet people live like that.

Why do people end up where they don't want to be? Because they believe other

things determine their destination.

The Danger of Drifting

One of the main reasons we end up on the wrong road isn't because of a sudden,

dramatic rebellion, but simply because we stop paying attention. We drift. Hebrews

2:1 warns us to pay much closer attention to what we have heard, "lest we drift

away from it." You don't have to deliberately drive your car into a ditch to crash; you

just have to take your hands off the steering wheel. If we aren't actively and

intentionally choosing the path of Christ, the natural currents of culture and our own flesh will always pull us off course.

1. Intentions Do Not Determine Destination

Samson had the greatest of intentions to deliver Israel from the Philistines (Judges

13-16), but his actions, choices, and steps led him down a path of compromise and

ultimately to his demise. David had great intentions to honor God and lead his nation well, but his decisions with Bathsheba nearly completely derailed his life and reign (2 Samuel 11-12). If intentions determined our destination, very few bad things would ever happen. As the saying goes, "The road to Hell is paved with good intentions." Everyone has good intentions, but that's not always the path they take.

2. Circumstances Do Not Determine Destination

Consider Joseph. God gave him a dream, a picture of his future, a promise of the

authority He would bestow upon him—his brothers bowing down to him (Genesis

37). But Joseph's circumstances were far from ideal:

  • He was sold as a slave, yet he chose not to act like one.
  • He was tempted by Potiphar's wife, yet he chose not to live like a victim.
  • He was thrown in jail, yet he didn't act like a jailbird.

Despite his difficult circumstances, Joseph remained faithful to God and made wise

choices. Ultimately, he reached the destination God had planned for him. We are never victims of our circumstances. Think of a rudder on a boat. It gives the boat the ability to go where the wind is not blowing.

We have the power to choose our path, even when the winds of life are against us.

3. Daily Habits Determine Direction

If intentions and circumstances don't dictate where we end up, what does? Our

daily habits. Our lives are the sum total of the small, seemingly insignificant

decisions we make every day. Reading your Bible for ten minutes today might not

seem life-changing on its own, but over five years, that habit fundamentally alters

your spiritual trajectory. The direction of your life is carved out by your daily

routines.

Choose Your Path

Direction, not intention, determines destination.

Direction, not circumstances, determines destination.

The road you take determines your destination. How you live determines where

you end up. But does this mean it's all up to us, all about our own effort and

striving? No. There is a road laid out for us, a supernatural ability for us to embrace.

We see this beautiful shift from our own efforts to God's grace in John 6:40 (MSG):

"This is what my Father wants: that anyone who sees the Son and trusts who he

is and what he does and then aligns with him will enter real life, eternal life. My

part is to put them on their feet alive and whole at the completion of time."

Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). When we trust in Him and align

our lives with His will, He empowers us to walk the path that leads to true life, both

now and for eternity.

So, where will you be in ten years? That depends entirely on the direction of

your feet today.
